“Drowsing asleep at dawn with the beads and chiffon of an evening tangled among dying orchids on the floor beside her bed.” The Great Gatsby
Daisy Buchanan, Mia Farrow’s character in 1974’s The Great Gatsby, is a protagonist for not only the movie but for 1920’s glamour couture and more specifically, the flapper dress. This year awaits the return of The Great Gatsy to our theatre screens with Baz Luhrmann’s remake and this season River Island have also been inspired by the twenties and introduced a collection largely inspired by Gatsby Glamour.
British Designer William Tempest has collaborated with the high street store for this exclusive collection. His designs are known for being innovative and modern, yet this collection is undeniably 1920’s vintage glamour inspired but with an art deco style. The collection produces heavily beaded flapper frocks and embellished blouses. True to Tempest designs, chiffon fabrics with exquisite detail are of unsurpassed quality. The designer refers to inspiration drawn from Egyptian style of Cleopatra and even beetle designs. The metal handbags, beetles and rich satin and leather reflect Tempest’s experimental style.
River Island has always been a high street elite, however this season is arguably its best yet. In store River Island has never looked so exuberant. There is a glamorous palette of sequined nude and shimmering black, an essence of a vintage jazz era, fabrics are embossed and quilted, and chiffon is weighed down in exquisite beads. Knitwear is sequined, LBD’s are luxe and the floor is filled with column dresses and laser cut heels. Vintage glamour is in River Island at it’s best. Daisy Buchanan is the epitome of 1920’s flapper dress glamour yet this season the vintage flapper dress exudes modern glamour.

I love all the fabrics and detail of all of these pieces. The gold skirt is the perfect AW’12 pencil skirt and will be a great buy for the Christmas season.
